Ace fighter pilot Norman Anil Kumar Browne next IAF chief

New Delhi

Air Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne, an ace fighter pilot who as a senior commander activated the tricky Nyoma Advanced

Landing Ground on the Chinese border by personally hopping aboard the first flight to it in 2009, will be the next Air Chief.
Browne will take over after Air Chief Marshal P V Naik retires from service on July 31.

Browne, who belongs to Allahabad, is regarded by many as a "no-nonsense" officer with an impressive career record that includes
operational experience in three generations of fighter aircraft — the Hunters, MiG-21s as well as the Su- 30s. He has logged over

3,100 hours in fighters. His son Omar is also a fighter pilot and is currently based in Bareilly where he flies the Su-30 MKI.

Browne, who is currently posted as Vice Chief of Air Staff, was selected for the first batch of pilots who trained on the Jaguar ground

attack fighters that were acquired in 1979. He went on to command a Jaguar squadron.

Browne was central to the establishment of the Indian Defence Wing in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1997 where he served
as defence attache for three years. Some consider him more open to western equipment and fighters instead of being
a hard and fast "Russia fan".
